Your Secret Heart is one of the sweetest songs on my album, Hidden Treasure. I have often been asked about the origin of the track and the answer isn't what you would expect.
Imagine being stuck in space. Watching the world pass by your window several times a day. Well, that's exactly what happened to Russian astronaut Sergei Krikalev in 1991. He found himself stranded in space due to the political turmoil of the collapse of the Soviet Union. This event left the Russian space program in disarray and caused significant delays in the scheduling of future missions, forcing Krikalev to spend an additional five months on the Mir space station.
During this time, Krikalev was only able to contact his wife on a few occasions. They were able to have brief conversations via satellite, which allowed them to stay connected and support each other during this challenging time.
The lyrics in the chorus capture his thoughts
"Just wanted to send a message through
A hundred things that I would like to say to you would only be a start
Just needed to make it up to you
Where I stand nothing is hidden from my view, but I just can't see
I just can't see your secret heart"
In the end, Krikalev's extended stay on Mir was a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit. He remained focused and dedicated to his work, and his wife provided him with the emotional support he needed to get through this difficult time. Their experience is a reminder of the importance of communication and support in maintaining strong relationships, even in the face of great challenges.
